Music video picks: Kikagaku Moyo, Crows, Ashinoa & Mildlife

Kikagaku Moyo – Kumoyo Island

A Japanese group’s possibly the last album ever ”Kumoyo Island” will be released in May. Two songs with crazy illustrated music videos are out already. Especially the immediately catchy ”Cardboard Pile” raises expectations high for the upcoming LP.

Crows – Garden of England

London-based Crows published their second album and the single ”Garden of England” is a fiery piece of Brexit / Covid era psych-post-punk.

Ashinoa – Koalibi

The French Ashinoa, similarly signed and published by Fuzz Club, is one of Mertsi’s early year favourites. Do check out their album ”L’Orée”, it’s fruity.

Mildlife – Live from South Channel Island

A year ago, Australian Mildlife recorded session in a small artificial island South Channel Fort. Now this whole session, live versions of pre-released material, is on Youtube, as well as on vinyl. Mildlife sound is somewhat combination of jazz-funk, disco and psychedelia. A tip for the busy ones: in 15:45, a bit slower song ”Im Blau” with exciting rhythm and bass.

Arvio: Heaters – Matterhorn (2017)

Psykedeelisen musiikin paljoudessa michiganlainen Heaters kuulostaa uniikilta. Heatersin kaiutettu laulu ja melodiset rock’n’roll-riffit jammailevat psykedeelisessä lakeudessa, täyteläinen ja retrohenkinen soundi huuruisiin garagerock-vivahteisiin kietoutuen.

Heatersin ensi-EP Solstice (2014) sai syystäkin newyorklaisen levy-yhtiö Beyond Beyond is Beyondin katseet kohoamaan. Lafka julkaisi kaksi lupaavaa Heaters-levyä, Holy Water Poolin (2015) ja Baptistinan (2016), vintage-henkiset, monin paikoin mukaansatempaavat psykerock-levyt. Pitkälti samalla reseptillä, joskin jylhemmillä mausteilla, on valmistettu uutuslevy Matterhorn.

Aiemmilla levyillä Heatersin lauluosuuksissa vuorottelivat basisti Nolan Krebs ja kitaristi Andrew Tamlyn. Tamlynin jätettyä bändin solistinhommat hoitaa pääosin Krebs. Vaikka Tamlynin nasaali täydensi hyvin Krebsin jäykempää ääntä, oli kaksi pääsolistia enemmänkin esteettinen tehokeino, joka korosti bändin energisyyttä nopeissa kappaleissa.

Heaters osaa rokata. Vuoden 2016 KEXP-keikalla mukana vielä sekä Tamlyn että Krebs. 

 

Harvasta neo-psykedeliabändistä voi sanoa “mahtipontinen” ilman assosiaatioita taistelu- tai sinfoniametalliin (terveiset muillekin Turisas-faneille!), mutta Heaters tekee poikkeuksen. Uuden levyn nimi ja kansitaide kuvaavat Sveitsin Matterhorn-vuorta, ja säväyttävät Thanksgiving I ja Thanksgiving II ovat hyviä esimerkkiä Heatersin monikerroksisesta, kuohkeasta soitosta.

Matterhornilla on vähemmän garage-rosoisuutta, enemmän jyhkeitä kitararock-soundeja ja progressiivisempia kappalerakenteita. Soitto on rauhallisempaa ja siinä on melankolisiakin sävyjä, mutta perussyke on kuitenkin psykedeelisen rytmikäs. Rumpali Joshua Korfin paukutus kasaa tervettä vastapainoa Krebsin kaikuvalle laululle, joka on mukavasti erottuvaa, mutta hitusen venytettyä.

Bronze Behavior -kappale on psykedeelinen maalailu ja Hollannin samannimisestä juhlapäivästä ideansa saanut Kingsday leikittelee upottavalla rytmillä. Niiden jälkeen Hochelega-biisi ei oikein jää mieleen. Pearls on mollivoittoinen ja muhkea kuusiminuuttinen, jossa pelataan maltillisella kompilla ja kuulailla urkusoundeilla. Pearls toimii, joskaan ei kosketa kaunista vaikutelmaa syvemmälle.

Levy loppuu todella komeaan Séance-ralliin, jonka kaltaiset kiivaat tykitykset ovat yleisempiä aiemmilla levyillä. Kertosäen toisen tahdin valtamerensyvää bassonuottia on ilo jytisyttää kaiuttimista, ja biisin lopussa vielä kerran encoreen yltyvän huiman riffin myötä levy saavuttaa vodkapaukun lailla energisöivän katarsiksen.

Kokonaisuutena Matterhorn on yhtenäinen, soljuva psykedeelisen kitararockin albumi. Parhaimmillaan se punoo yhteen kiehtovia vastakohtia: painavia ja kuulaita äänimaailmoja, leveää psykedeliaa ja garage-riffejä. Erottuvia biisejä ole kylliksi, jotta mestariteoksesta voisi puhua, mutta laadukas levy Matterhorn on.

Heatersin keväinen Euroopan-kiertue ei yltänyt Pohjoismaihin asti. Yhtyeen omalaatuinen soundi ja kuulemani mukaan rautainen livekunto olisi hieno todistaa paikan päällä.

Heaters’ unique sound combines thick layers of psychedelic rock with echoing vocals and garage influences. After two very promising albums and one EP, the Michigan band returns with its third LP, which follows pretty much the same recipe but with more ambitious, grande and melancholy elements. Precise and ambitious, Matterhorn is a good album, and would be even better if with a few more excellent songs to increase it sharpness in addition to impressing tracks Thanksgiving I & II, Kingsday and Seancé. The latest is a prime example of the band’s ability to master both atmospheric sounds and quick-paced garage psych rock n’ roll.
I’ve always been deeply inspired by Heaters’ vintage influenced sound and would love to witness their energizing (or so I heard) live presence one day.
