Sisilialaisen Gioele Valentin (Lay Llamas, Herself) sooloprojekti Jujun toinen LP Our Mother Was A Plant alkaa soundillisesti siitä, mihin paikoitellen todella hurmaava ykköslevy JuJu (2016) jäi – omaleimaisen psykedelian, krautin, afrobeatin, glamin ja pakanallisen hypnotiikan yhdistelmään.
Jo avausraidassa Death by Beautiful Things basso määrää tahdin tyylikkäästi kuin vanhoina päivinä jamittelupsyken löytänyt diskokuningas. Fuzz-kitarat surisevat tarkasti ja pinkflloydmaiset näppäilyt maalaavat ilmaan runsaan ja rytmikkään soundin.
Kesken avausraidan jykevän jamittelun unenomainen, helkkyvä kosketinsarja leijailee ylä-äänistä kuin merenpohjaan vajoava hopeahely. Unenomainen yksityiskohta viimeistelee levyn upean sisääntulon.
Elektronisen-, psykedeelisen rockin ja etno-musiikin tyylisuuntia yhdistävässä Jujussa on merellistä ja mystistä särmää. It’s Psychedelic Baby -blogin haastattelussa Valenti on kertonut sisilialaisena seuranneensa avainpaikalta Välimerta ylittävää muuttoliikettä – siihen kietoutuvaa rakastavaa vieraanvaraisuutta, silmitöntä julmuutta ja siirtolaisten mukanaan tuomia tarinoita.
“Juju on sisäinen matka kaltoinkohdellun omatuntomme maailmaan”, Valenti kuvaili tuolloin projektiaan.
Jujun tummasävyinen, tribaali pauhu todella on herättelevää. Perkussiot laukkaavat, särökitara seuraa saumatta marakassia, rytmi tiivistyy ja rumpujen kiihkeä kumu kuiskii tiivistä joukkovoimaa.
Valenti on Herself- ja Lay Llamas-projekteillaan niittänyt mainetta italialaisella underground-kentällä, mutta on viime vuosina tullut tunnetuksi myös Euroopassa – mistä merkkinä myös kiinnitys Fuzz Club Recordsin talliin. Valenti on vieraillut myös ruotsalaisbändi Josefin Öhrnin kokoonpanossa yhteiskiertueella Goatin kanssa.
Levyn luonteikkain kappale, And Play a Game -sinkku heräilee kesäaamun horroksesta kuin matkaaja palermolaisella parvekkeella, vain kiihtyäkseen kekseliään funkahtavan bassoriffin kautta niskakarvat nostattavaan etno-elektro-psykedelia-kitararock-poljentoon.
Menevän James Dean -rockin jälkeen biisien taso hieman ohenee. I Got Your Soul tuntuu tulevan kulman takaa, Patrick on taustalauluineen tarttuva muttei järin pitkäikäinen. Yhdeksänminuuttinen What A Bad Day on biisinä kelvollinen, muttei erotu edukseen jyräävän jytäävän alkupuolen jälkeen.
Sunny After Noon -kitarointi päättää tasaisen levyn, joka ei kasva huomattavan eheäksi kokonaisuudeksi, mutta kuulostaa monin kohdin erinomaisen kekseliäältä. Vaikka Our Mother Was A Plant jää osin vaille avauspuoliskon lupailemaa huipentumaa, Jujun albumi on omalaatuinen, multi-instrumentaalinen psykerock-levy.
Ja ennen kaikkea: Valentin rehellisen rohkeassa asenteessa haastaa ihmiskuntaa pohtimaan omantunnon kysymyksiä, ykseyttä ja elämän arvokkuutta, tiivistyy paljon siitä mihin nyky-psykedeliaa tarvitaan.
Sisilian-based Gioele Valenti’s project Juju comes up with its second album, again impressing with a mixture of psychedelia, kraut, glam-rock, neo-pagan hypnotism and funk. Full of buzzing instruments and lively details, built in very distinct style which combines European and African sounds, Our Mother Was A Plant takes and evolves the elements that impressed in Juju’s first album and in Valenti’s Lay Llamas project.
Opening song Death by Beautiful Things starts with a bossy bass, like a disco king who has grabbed a space jam guitar in his old days. Fuzz guitars and pinkfloydish strokes create an abundant and rhythmic sound. The single And Play a Game starts off like a traveler drinking his morning coffee in a sunny balcony in Palermo, only to let a funky bass riff to carry the listener to an incredible ethno-electro-psychedelia-guitar rock rhythm.
Although the album slightly fatigues in its latter songs after the exquisite start, Our Mother Is A Plant is an unique psychedelic album. It’s partially dark, dangerous-sounding even, but has a reassuring, unifying magic in it. And maybe most importantly, Valenti challenges us not to forget mankind’s crucial questions of conscience, our unity as different but equal people, and the worth of human lives.
